UNFOLD is an acclaimed 360 live concept led by some of Britain's most vital young poets - inviting them to recast their words with a string ensemble, percussionists and visual artists. A curated experience that transcends spoken word, contemporary classical, jazz’s new wave and electronica. It sounds like Kate Tempest fused with Ezra Collective. UnFOLD lies in the space between language, music and illustration. From the team behind Lyrix Organix (Rum Shack - Glastonbury, British Council, Roundhouse).

 

With headline shows at Brighton Festival (at invitation of Kate Tempest), Roundhouse and Love Supreme Festival; collaborations with London Symphony Orchestra and recent solo performances at Lovebox already under their belt, UnFOLD embarks on their first UK tour with a spellbinding 60 minute live production featuring 3 spoken word artists + full band + animations - every show is a one-off experience.

SOPHIA THAKUR

With over 14,000 YouTube subscribers and two TED Talks under her belt, Sophia Thakur is emerging as one of the most captivating and vital female voices in spoken word. A poet, model and motivational speaker, her work resonates with disenfranchised youth, highlighting racial and social injustice. Sophia recently performed with musicians from London Symphony Orchestra as part of UnFOLD’s collaboration with Jerwood+ composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman at LSO St Lukes.

LAURIE OGDEN

A “rising star of poetry, screen and stage”, Laurie grew up in Liverpool and emerged from Roundhouse’s ‘Spit The Atom’ Collective (who featured at UnFold’s sold out 2016 show) to become an unforgettable young voice in the project. Her poetry is subtle and acutely observed; and since featured on Sofar Sounds, national TV campaigns (Nationwide) and is currently a National Youth Theatre REP.

TOBY THOMPSON

An unmistakable performance poet mentored by Akala at Hip Hop Shakespeare Company (described him as "… easily one of the most gifted young wordsmiths"). Acclaimed by Kate Tempest ("Toby Thompson is the future"). Since working with UnFold, Toby has become a resident at Battersea Arts Centre, and been commissioned by National Portrait Gallery, Theatre Royal Bath and Sir Ken Robinson. This summer 2018 he takes his acclaimed solo show ‘On The Record’ to Edinburgh Fringe’s Pleasance Theatre.

CAMILO TIRADO

Accomplished producer, percussionist and electronic musician who works closely with Talvin Singh, James Holden and Nitin Sawhney. Producer of UnFOLD EP2 and live musician for UnFOLD performances.

KIERON RENNIE

Kieron is a multifaceted performance poet The poise of a young Gil Scott Heron mixed with Jean-Michel Basquiat - Kieron’s is making waves as an exhilirating spoken word artist strongly influenced by visual art. A Barbican Young Poets resident, his languid poetry provides social commentary tackling subjects from gang culture to male identity and depression. Since joining UnFold he has blossomed into a confident and boundary-pushing performer about to enter his prime.

SOLOMON OB

Raised in foster care, Bristol-based Solomon OB is on the cusp of becoming a major force in spoken word. A captivating live performer, Solomon blurred the lines between rap and poetry to become National Slam champion (2016) and receive support by Radio 1Xtra. Since joining UnFold he has been featured on BBC One, Evening Standard and won ‘Best British Spoken Word Artist’ (BBE Awards).

London String Collective 

Highly experienced contemporary classical musicians (SB:TV, Kings Place) who have been instrumental in collaborating and composing to fulfil vision of the young poets. Led by Tanya Cracknell alongside founding members Abigail Dance and Jay Jenkinson.

Tim Doyle

Drummer and experimental musician who has unique experience across a range of styles. A versatile addition to UnFOLD, he has become the ideal complement to working with a diverse range of young spoken word artists.
